10 Things Tourists Wish They Knew Before Visiting Spain

spaintravel tipssafety

Spain welcomes over 85 million tourists every year. Most have an incredible time. But almost all of them say the same thing: "I wish someone had told me this before I arrived." Here are the 10 things that catch tourists off guard the most.

1. Lunch is at 2pm. Dinner is at 9pm. Seriously.

This is not a suggestion. If you walk into a restaurant at noon expecting lunch, you will find empty tables and confused waiters. Spanish lunch runs from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Dinner starts at 9:00 PM at the earliest, and most locals do not sit down until 9:30 or 10:00.

If you are hungry at noon, look for a "menu del dia" — a fixed 3-course lunch for EUR 10-16 that many restaurants offer. It is the best deal in Spanish dining.

2. Pickpockets are real, and they are professionals

Las Ramblas in Barcelona, Puerta del Sol in Madrid, the Alhambra in Granada — these are not just tourist attractions, they are pickpocket hotspots. These are not amateurs. They work in teams, use distraction techniques, and can empty your pocket in under 3 seconds.

Rule of thumb: phone and wallet in your front pockets, always. Never leave your bag on the back of a chair. Use a crossbody bag in crowded areas.

3. Tap water is safe (and free)

You do not need to buy bottled water in Spain. Tap water is perfectly safe to drink everywhere. At restaurants, ask for "agua del grifo" — it is free. Some waiters will try to bring you a bottle anyway. Insist on tap water if you prefer it.

4. Siesta is not a myth

Between 2:00 and 5:00 PM, many small shops close. Pharmacies, boutiques, bakeries — they shut their doors and reopen in the evening. Supermarkets and large chains stay open, but if you need something from a small shop, plan for morning or evening.

5. Sundays are quiet

Most shops are closed on Sundays. Supermarkets inside train stations might be open. Restaurants are open but may have reduced hours. If you need groceries, buy them on Saturday.

6. Tipping is not expected

Spain is not a tipping culture. Service is included in the price. If you had excellent service, rounding up the bill or leaving EUR 1-2 is appreciated but never expected. Do not feel pressured to leave 15-20% like in the United States.

7. The emergency number is 112

It works everywhere in Spain (and all of Europe). Operators speak English. For police specifically, call 091 (national police) or 092 (local police). For ambulance, call 061.

If you are robbed, go to the nearest police station and file a "denuncia" — an official report. You will need this for your travel insurance claim.

8. Free museum hours exist

Many major museums offer free entry during specific hours. The Prado in Madrid is free Monday-Saturday from 6:00-8:00 PM. The Reina Sofia is free Monday and Wednesday-Saturday from 7:00-9:00 PM. Check each museum website for their free hours — it can save you EUR 15+ per visit.

9. Pharmacies have green crosses and rotating 24h duty

Pharmacies ("farmacias") are identified by a green cross sign. They can provide basic medical advice and many medications without a prescription. When a pharmacy is closed, a sign on the door tells you which nearby pharmacy is on 24-hour duty ("farmacia de guardia").

10. Spanish people are incredibly friendly — if you try

Learn five words: "hola" (hello), "gracias" (thank you), "por favor" (please), "la cuenta" (the bill), and "perdon" (excuse me). The effort matters more than the pronunciation. Spaniards will go out of their way to help you if you show basic respect for their language and culture.
